I just got a new African Sideneck....

When I put it in the quaratine tank, he started eating the pebbles on the bottom of it. I know that certain reptiles eat rocks for their digestive system, but should a 3 inch sideneck be doing that?

Thanks!

Many times when a turtle is introduced to a new aquarium or when the gravel/sand is changed, they will eat some of it. They also will occasionally eat it now and again.
I once had a mud turtle that had been kept with large river gravel in it's tank it's whole life. Then I changed to a natural sand. For the first couple of hours the thing drove me nuts by eating the sand. It stopped after that first day but I was really worried about it getting impacted. For a few days after that though, it's poop was full of the new sand.
