Gravid redtails???

Conrad May 04, 2004 05:38 PM

Well, I thought I'd share a "possible" bit of information with everyone. My female G. oxcephala may be gravid afterall. I hadn't witnessed any breeding activity or copulation, however, my 6' female hasn't has refused to eat in two weeks now, yet seems to have gained some girth during that time. So much so her underlaying pattern is visable a little over halfway toward the back of her body. She's been hanging out in her hide box and waterbowl alternately, so I'm going to go ahead and prep her a laying box for her. Let's hope for CB Gonyosoma folks!!!

Hi Conrad,

I've had Gonyosoma clutches three different times. One female for two consecutive years and then a second female this year. In all cases it was very obvious they were gravid so I think your intuition is probably correct. The only exception was that female who continued to produce a single fertile egg every few weeks.

Now my luck with the eggs is another story. You know about the flood, of course, but the two clutches I got this year crashed within 20 days.

I hope your luck is better.

What is your prospective on why your clutches might have crashed to help me prevent any problems that may occure? I've heard that they're eggs tend to be rather hard shelled also, should my possible clutch go that far, would you recommend cutting "hatching windows"?

If things go well, I would be glad to...unless of course I only hatch like one or two...then thery're ALL MINE...lol...I'm hoping to get a couple of silvers from the breeding since the father is that phase.
