tempgun question

princesslisa88 May 04, 2004 08:44 PM

I just rec'd my tempgun today in the mail. I have MANY digital thermometers all over Herman's enclosure and Spike's. I took the temps with this new tempgun and all my temps are reading 10 degrees cooler and for my leopard tort, that is a significant difference... Now I don't know what to believe! Anyone ever experience this with a tempgun?

Temp guns aren’t as accurate as medicals, the most accurate thermometers are mercury medicals, use one to know the calibration of your temp gun. Then you will know its level of accuracy. As you can see the digital medic gun was accurate on every readings of the water glass, the temp gun gave me different readings every time, however sins its only 2-3 degrees of inaccuracy I still use this gun every day and think of it as I valuable tool.

Don't forget, also, that the temp gun registers the surface temp of what it's reflecting from. The air temp may be different - especially if what you are reading is the slate basking rock under the hot lights.

Temp Guns and digital thermometers are complimentary to one another. Temp Guns read surface temps (using an infrared beam), while digital thermos read an air temp (typically using a probe or base). there is a significant difference between the two

using them together will give you the best overall understanding of your cage and setup.

we use Temp Guns to measure basking spots, hot spots, gravid females (in snakes), etc, while we use digital thermos to measure ambient air temps, overnight lows, daytime highs, etc.

best of luck!
