Dry food Iguanas will actually eat?

buzzard1 May 04, 2004 11:15 PM

Sorry for writing so much in the forum, I just have so many questions and I think this is the best place to get answers. Any ways I would like to feed my Rhino iguana some premade dry food to keep him healthy and for when I cant get a ride to the store to feed him. I do not have a car and it some times is a problem wehn I run out of his normal salad style food. So far I have tried zoomeds juvenile iguana food and he wont even give it thought to eat. I have mixed it with his regualr food an no luck. Was wondering if people who had luck could tell me what they are feeding theres and where to buy it at.
thanks
chris

I supplement my Cyclura and Green Iguana fresh diet with RepCal iguana pellets. The adults eat it dry and the babies eat it soaked until it's soft. You can purchase it from most online herp suppliers...try herpsupplies.com.

I use the Repcal also and the Marion Zoological reptile diet, marionzoological.com. I serve both softened. Did you try the ZooMed more than once. They can be quite stubborn and learn to like certain things they refuse at 1st offering.
like their personalities, cyclura have different tastes too.

Yes Ive been adding the zoomed pelets in his food dish for over a week now. I tried dry and also added some water on the pelets. No matter how hungry he is he wont touch the stuff.

I go through 60 to 80 lbs of zoo med dry a year. I feed all my iguanas (cyclura and ctenosaura) only dry food. It may take time to adjust, but once they do, it is the most easy and carefree way to feed your lizards. Have one bowl in thier enclosure of just dry, and have another bowl with greens with dry sprinkled on top. Feed them only one or twice a week the greens with sprinkled dry. This will cause them to be hungry, but not starve. They will sooner or later start to nibble on the dry in the greens dish more and more until you just have them eat dry. I had a whole load of collard greens this week that I got for free, so I decided to treat the igs to some fresh greens. About half the lizards ignored them, and the other half just nibbled a little on them. None of them finished eating them. I now have a lot of dried out greens I have to clean out of each cage, which is whty I don't feed greens anymore.

I started supplementing with dry food last summer. Since then I have experimented with about 75lbs of Ziglar,Marion,ZooMed and RepCal all for rhino iguanas. I presoak the dry in bottle water in about 1-1/4 parts water to 1 part dry food. It is amazing how the dry can spong it up. Zoo Med and Zigler turn to mush when soaked, and are less liked by the igs. Of the 4 Marion is by far the most favored in my group. Even the hatchlings seemed to like it as much as the rest of their salad. Being that it is of small size pellets, it is ideal for small igs.
Good luck
