humidifier for panthers?

zag May 05, 2004 12:09 AM

Is running a humidifier a good way of raising humidity for my ambanjas? I've been dripping and misting so far, but the humidity stays at about 45 - 55%. I read that 70% was better.

Yes it will really help. The first thing to try is add live plants to the cage, and then try aiming a humidifier (ultrasonics work great as there are no filters to change and the fog they produce will condense on foliage etc.) at the cage. Many keepers run flexible tubing or pvc pipe from the spout of the humidifier through the cage mesh near the cage top to "pipe in" the fog. Cycle the unit using a lamp timer which has multiple settings. You can create cycles of less and more humidity during 24 hours which is great for chams. A room humidifier is about $35 at a larger drug store. You'll still need to spray for direct drinking water, but if the humidity stays higher your cham will not dehydrate as fast between sprayings.

Thanks. I am using a drip and spraying one or two times a day. They seem to get plenty of water drom the drippage. Do you know exactly where I could get a humidifier like you described? I have a cool air humidifer now, which lowers the temp a little and produces no real condensation. What kind of cycle should I put the timer on when I get one... how many times per day and for how long. Thanks a lot. I'm trying to provide the best for my first panthers.
