Sad news about vets in Sweden... :~(

Gunilla May 05, 2004 05:42 AM

I was going to the vet with my female Teo that has something wrong with the lens in her eyes.

I usually drive 2 hour to go to the vet (we basically only have 3 good herp vets in Sweden). I called her today – and it turns out that she has quit her job… So… they recommended me to another vet – in Stockholm. That means I have to drive for 4 hours (one way) to get there… And now Sweden only have TWO good reptile vets… this is so sad! I will contact this new vet to see what she has too say (she is away and will be back May 15…) and of course I will take Teo to her to have her examined. But this makes things *so* much more difficult…

All I want is for Teo to be ok...

Sorry about whining… but I just had to let it out…

much you just want things to be better, and I know you just want the help you need. It can be pretty frustrating. I found a great vet after a bad experience myself so I can sympathize. Come to think about it her name wasn't on the flyer I got in the mail yesterday for the clinic I take Kiana to...I hope I'm not in a similar situation.

Hopefully this vet knows her stuff and you and Teo will come out of this happier and healthier.

That's horrible about your vet situation. I've never seen a beardie's eyes do that before. Is there anything I can do? Do you know what the cause of it is? Could it be some sort of allergic reaction? Has anything changed in Teo's cage lately? Just a thought. Poor little Teo. Let's get her healthy. I'll see if I can help you by contacting my reptile vet and see what he says. Maybe he can offer some advice. ???

Beautiful Dragons

Hi Veronica,

As far as I know nothing has changed in Teo’s environment. I have no idea what could have caused this. Did you see my other post http://forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=440992,440992 about Teo’s problems? (It is a very long post, but it tells her story).

I will contact this new vet at the end of May and see what she has to say about this. Right now I have no idea what it can be. I have searched a little at the net, but haven’t found anything that “match” this.

If you see your vet and can ask him about his opinion I would *really* appreciate it! But I think it might be difficult to say without seeing the dragon.

Thanks for caring, Veronica – I keep you updated!

My post about Teo's problems

Hello Gunilla. I read your previous post about Teo's eyes and passed it on to my reptile vet. Here is what he has to say just from looking at Teo's photo and not really having any info.

"Hi Veronica, can't see that clearly on the image; there are a number of causes of eye clouding (there's always fluid in eyes, it's just normally transparent so it's invisible; for it to become visible requires cloudiness of the fluid). Infection is one possibility; glaucoma or cataracts are other possibilities. I can't tell if the problem is in the cornea, the fluid, or the lens from the photo. Is it in both eyes? If so, infection
with bacteria is less likely, as is trauma. A metabolic problem such as lipid keratopathy, diabetes, etc could affect both eyes. So could an inherited cataract tendency. Possibly viral or unusual parasitic disease. As you can see, there are quite a few possibilities, none terribly common, and a good eye exam would be needed to help tell them apart, plus a good dietary history. For now, keep the lizard warm (85-95F) and consider
antibiotic therapy (Baytril or trimeth-sulfa)... and get a good exam when possible. Good luck, Mark Burgess DVM"

I hope this info gives you a place to start looking for answers. I really don't know much about problems with beardie's eyes. But I'm very interested to to find out what is causing this. I hope you find an answer soon. Please let me know if I can be of any help to you. I can try and get you meds if you think they could help.

With love,
Veronica

Thank you *so much* Veronica for asking your vet about Teo’s problem! I really appreciate it! But I know it is nearly impossible to say what might be wrong without seeing her.

Your vet asked if it was both eyes, and yes it is. And the lenses are perfectly clear, not cloudy.

My ordinary vet has quit her job, so now I have to drive all the way to Stockholm to see a new vet (which is very good!). It will be a 4 hour drive one way so it is hard to “just go there” if you know what I mean… And this new vet is away and won’t be back until the end of May so I guess I just have to wait and hope that Teo’s condition won’t get worse…

I will print your vets’ opinion and bring it along when I see the vet. It is *always* good with several opinions. I really appreciate that Mark Burgess took the time to look into this – thank him from me!

He mentioned a possibly viral or unusual parasitic disease. I wonder if it might be Teo’s problems with coccidia? She just can’t get completely rid of it…

Just two more questions…! What exactly is glaucoma? I have tried to search for it at the net, but I don’t quite understand exactly what it is?

And what are cataracts? (Sorry for all these questions, but it is a bit hard to be Swedish when it comes to medical stuff! I am not even good at it at Swedish! Haha)

I will keep you updated!
