Shed to Eggs... how long?

Sasheena May 05, 2004 09:18 AM

I have a proven breeder who had 8 beautiful eggs last year. This year she seems to be taking longer, is huger, and otherwise I'm pulling my hair out waiting for her to lay her eggs. I remember last year thinking she was "large". One day after she shed I said to myself, "I think she'll lay eggs" and voila, she did. No muss, no fuss. But this year I think I'm paying closer attention. I thought she was getting ready to lay them, but it turns out she was just restless while lying in her egg laying container. I've offered her my "spare" egg laying container, but it's designed for a smaller snake, and she still seems to prefer it, though it doesn't really FIT her. I just wondered how long a person should wait before worrying that a cal king is eggbound. She's HUGE I mean HUMONGOUS. I can't fathom how many eggs she must be carrying to be so large. She looks like she's carrying extra large twin chicken eggs!

Anyway, she shed only six days ago. I am glad I put the date into a program that counts the days, because otherwise I wouldn't believe it! My guess is that I would wait another week before deciding she is eggbound... any words of wisdom from those who have done this more than I have? This is only my second year breeding snakes. Last year went like clockwork, two gravid females, both having their eggs exactly on schedule and all hatching. Both even had 8 eggs. I think I was spoiled. Or something.

It can take up to 14 days for the females to lay their eggs and Ive even had a female go 16 days but usually its within or right at 14 days.

So I should take a BIG breath, step back, relax, and wait for eggs. She's gonna have a ZILLION by the looks of things. And our other cal king is HUGE-ER

Thanks for the time line. So I won't worry now, I'll just let her do her stuff
