Dominant Albino gene???

red_eyed_magalie May 05, 2004 09:49 AM

Ok,

I wanted to get an albino RT boa....

I have 1.1 common RT's now. Should I get a male or female.

The prices seem to be more affordable now. I think...

All I can afford is one. So I was wanting some opinions as to which choice would you make. Would you rather have a normal male breed to an albino female or vice versa......

Please advise
Thanks
Maggie

Maggs,

As far as an albino to normal breeding, there isn't really a preference which way you go. HOWEVER if you have an albino male, you can pick up multiple het or possible het for albino females and let him go to town making babies with them. With a female albino, you limit you're breeding possibilities.

Hope this answers your question...

Ok, thank you for your prompt reply.

I think it's better to have 2 females to 1 male ratio?

I don't know....still debating.

Thanks again
Maggie

Albino genes are recessive, thus far.
So since you already have 1.1 common red tails, id get a male, for a couple reasons.
1st, the male albino you get could breed at 18 months.
2nd, you could breed more females with one male.

If you do breed a male albino to your female normal, then you will get snakes that are normal looking but are Het for albino.
You then take those babie females and raise them up to breeding age, and breed back to daddy albino, and or het brothers. That will give you some albinos, male and female.
then you will have plenty of options and snakes to keep you busy for years to come.

Anything i didnt cover just ask.
Good luck.

That makes perfect sense....so to get all albinos (thought) I would need to have two albinos breed...

But like I said...that makes perfect sense. I think I will get a male first because chances are I can get the female and him to breed now verses having to wait for the female albino to grow and mature before breeding....then sell the "hets" to purchase a female albino and keep a "het" female to breed back and have an even bigger collection as you pointed out...

I could afford to get a male soon (hopefully) and then POW!!!! it's honeymoon time in the reptile room... hehehehe

ooooohhhh you so smart!!! Thank you! Sometimes it helps to get other opinions because someone else can provide more options...

I love Kingsnake!
