I used washed and sifted playsand from home depot. Only try it if you have an adult, babies can eat it and get impacted. I used a 25 pound bag in my 4x2x2 foot cage, so it is about 2 inches deep throughout.

Thanks! He is an adult. So you just buy the sand and put it right into tank? don't need to do anything else?

you need to sift the sand to get the bigger pebbles out. i bought my sifter from a dollar store. a fine colander(sp? you know a kitchen strainer) if it's really fine will work good also.

The sand I bought was presifted and had no pebbles. You will have to sift it if there are larger pebbles.

Do you need to wet the sand down or just dump right into the tank?

Just dump it in.
