Anyone ever get bit by their snapper, if so how bad?

Turtlequest May 05, 2004 12:18 PM

My snapper is only the size of my fist and im still scared of him, haha. I was wondering if anyone here has ever been bitten by a snapper. It must hurt.

Anyone ever lose a chunk of skin, or a finger?

I got bit by one that I had when it was a year old. It didn't hurt that big (he was only 3-4" but he took a little chunk of skin from me. I would recommend gettin bit....it 'just isn't fun.

Even though my little tank is about 5" I still try to hand feed her occasionally like I did when she was the size of a half dollar. And she seems to think my hand is the food and not the bright orange rosie red in my hand....so I've learned to time the strike and move the food just enough to get it in...
Then theres the time where she bites my finger and wont let go for about 2 minutes, and next thing I know, I'm bruised and bleeding on my finger tip...

I still hand feed my snapper. I've had her since she was a hatchling and frequently hand fed her all along. She is about 6 inches now, and is very careful about taking the food from my fingers. In fact, I think she is the tamest of all my turtles.

She did bite me a few times when she was little, but it didn't hurt much. Now she misses now and then when taking the food, but just grazes me.

She has never tried to bite me out out of fright.

Oh Yeah!

I was trying to pull a huge common out of the mud. He was atleast 15in long and 35lbs. He got my pointer finger. I had to take a trip to the hospital to get a tetnis and to get it cleaned cuz it went real deep!

i have been bitten on the back of the calf by a large (90lb ) wild alligator snapper.
while in the water, snappers are very uninclined to bite, but anyone who tells you that they handfeed snappers is going to get bitten. yeah, its cute when they are small, but when a snapper gets up to 5 or 10 lbs, its just silly.
luckily, the one that bit me was big enough that it got my whole calf in its mouth, and i had two painful, crescent shaped cuts to show for it, both deep in the middle, and had to get a tetanus shot. it bit me instinctively, after me dragging it out of the lake, and as soon as it saw it couldnt swallow me whole, it let go. i didnt have to wait for it to thunder. LOL.
but i wouldnt tempt a snapper with a finger.
