Question about aspen bedding.....

mom2autumnnreign May 05, 2004 03:10 PM

Ok, one of the main reasons I have reptiles is I have bad allergies....I'm allergic to dust, some plants and animal fur....my question is does the aspen cause problems w/ allergies???...I enjoy the fact I have an animal that doesnt make me sick everytime I get around her or clean her cage....so please let me know....because I'm thinking of changing her flooring to something else besides the carpet.

WEll aspen can be dusty depending on quality. Get the high grade bundles you can pick up at reptile expos. something that helps cut down on dust is empty the bundle into a large rubbermaid. Store away like normal, but once a week open and "stur up dust" as I call it. This cuts down on it alot. But I havent heard of it causeing alergc reactions. If I were to assume a reacton was to happen I would say your budgie would cause it befor the aspen. Trial and error

I've tried two kinds of aspen bedding. The first, from Walmart. I forget the brand, but they're small chips and have hardly any dust. This kind does not bother my allergies at all. (The packaging is yellow with text on it.)

The other kind I tried was this large shaving stuff from PetCo in a black packaging with a cat, dog and rodent on it (IIRC). This stuff was dusty as all get out, and definitely had a scent to it. Avoid this stuff.

You can always use papertowels. They aren't very pretty to look at, but I use it in most of my cages.

if wood products are a problem you could try newspapers,as the previous poster stated there are not attractive, but functional and the price is right.
