Pinky Mice Questions.

Scott_and_Cat May 05, 2004 03:22 PM

We've been toying with the idea of feeding pinky mice to our two larger geckos (AFT and Leo) once every two weeks or so...From experience, our two geckos will not eat anything that looks "dead", and we will have to buy two live pinkies...

We'd love everyone's input on the pro/con's of feeding pinky's to geckos. We're going to give it a go in a few weeks, and try to supplement their diet...but feeding pinky mice is not like feeding a variation of grubs and super gutloaded crickets...our big question is...what if they don't eat the pinky? I mean, how would one humanely euthanize an uneaten pinky?
How long do pinky mice last away from their mother? How do you keep pinky mice long enough to feed the geckos?

I personally would do something weird like try to "bottle" feed it and keep it warm....but that's just my love for cute fuzzy things.

once every two weeks is too much for a leo! Unless it's breeding, once a month or less is plenty. My geckos will eat thawed once, you could try it and just dangle it around so it looks alive. Pinkies are very much dependent on the individual. Some love them, some won't touch 'em. Just try. I have successfully kept a live pinky for 2-3 days, as long as it's relatively warm. I also have snakes, so dealing with extra pinkies is not a problem. Can't tell you how to euthanize. Do you have friends w/snakes? pinkies are high fat, but otherwise pretty good nutritionally.
