Water dish?

Melle May 05, 2004 04:08 PM

Hello,

Do savannah monitors need a water dish in their cage, or would i just be able to soak it or spray it down to keep it hydrated? I just finished setting up a 40 gallon breeder for a baby savannah that i will be getting this weekend at a show (yes, i am well aware of how big it will get, and how big of an enclosure it will eventually need. i did my homework way beforehand ) but i wasnt sure if a water dish should be put in there and if they will drink standing water, or if they will just not use it, spill it everywhere and bury it like my bearded dragon did when i kept one in his enclosure. thanks for any replies!

You should keep a dish for drinking water, and its cage should be relatively dry (too much moisture will cause skin problems). Also, you should put him in a luke warm tub of water (shoulder high) and take him outside on a warm day about once a week.

I would always have fresh water available to any monitor, whether they drink it or not depends.

Make sure you cover the top. A monitor cage shouldn't be dry or wet, but offering options in between. This can be achieved by a number of ways most notably 'hides' and a burrowable substrate.

i have raised a few savannah's and yes please give them a source of fresh water changed daily and big enough for them to get into i soak mine about 2 to 3 times a month in a big huge tub of water and they seem to love it and it gets the dried skin off of them so they dont go around all the time itchen ..good luck on your savvana..
