Sexing

cmh7s May 05, 2004 07:15 PM

When I bought Sydney, I was told she was a girl. That was last spring. I have recently had doubts and when I brought her to the pet store, the guy there popped her (which I wasn't sure about, does that hurt?, she's still young, 170g). We saw what appeared to be two white bumps on the sides that he said were hemipenes. They didn't stick out far at all and I have heard that there has been ambiguity with this. Here are some pictures of his/her body shape. Thanks in advance.

Wait, how do I put up pictures with no homepage or anything?

The best method is to have your vet or a serious herp store probe him/her. I am still new to sexing animals myself, but from what it sounds like it is a male. They can control their hemipenes pretty well after a few weeks after hatching(so it may not pop out). Check out www.vpi.com, they have a cool link to sexing snakes. In my opinion you should get it probed to be sure and also make sure the vet knows about reptiles.

best of luck
