Sick Turtle

annrace May 05, 2004 09:07 PM

My friend has a sick 3 toed box turtle that I am trying to care for. I was wondering if anyone can be of some help to me. The turtle is a female, she is very bloated front and back, her skin is extremely dry and peeling, she rarely eats. She feels heavy and her eyes are pretty clear. When ever I get the chance I try to hydrate her or mostuize her with some turtle moisturizer my friend has. Does any one know whats wrong with her? or what more I can do to help? I keep sugesting that she is taken to a vet, but her owner does not want to take her. I feel bad for this turtle and want to help it out as best I can, I dont know much about box turtles. Please help me, help her.

dont use chemicles on the turtle.. get the humidity up and basking temp to 80-85, cool side of the enclosure should be no cooler than 70, you should do ALOT of reading up on box turtles.. they dont do well indoors they require a fair amount of room, humidity and lighting...

try long (one hour or more) soaks in cool water about two inches deep
change it a few times...a bath tub is ideal,

try berries and earth worms and beetles to get some food into her.
a vet check never hurt either.

You should take the turtle away from your friend asap! And then read this page:www.anapsid.org/box.html

If I can get the turtle from my friend, does any one have advise about what I can do to find some one who can care for the turtle? I do not have the capabilities to take on another animal myself. Until then I will continue to try to care for her how ever I can.

If you told us where you were generally located, someone may know what agency you can take it to or someone may be up to adopt.
