Is this still too many lights for my panther???

pernads May 05, 2004 09:35 PM

Ive finally got the perfect emperature down, but it seems like a lot of light. I have 2 18" UVB lights from ESU, two 18" grow lights, for the plants, 1 100 watt daylight blue bulb for basking, and 1 75 watt red heat bulb thats always on. My hhouse gets cold, especially in his room. IWthou the light at night, i think it would be too cold. The cage only has 1 hot spto of 95*, and the bottom of the cage is about 65*. In the very middle of the cage, its usually about 80*. Is this good for my ambanja???

Thanks,
Greg

Probably not. Watch him. As long as he has a place to escape into shade and cooler temps he should be OK. If you find that he spends a lot of time in the shade retreat he may be too warm or trying to hide from light. I doubt it though. Compared to full outdoor sun our lamps are nothing. If your lights are on timers you could stagger when they come on or off in the morning and evening. Have his basking spot come on in the morning so he can warm up, then all the other lights later, basking spot off at the peak of the day when it is likely to get TOO warm in the room (depending on your local weather). Again, if he has lots of places to select from you will see a pattern in his behavior.

thanks..

I was thinkingof getting multiple timers, so that his cage has more than 2 cilimates. I have everything come on at 8 till 8. I was thinking about turning on his basking light, and a 2 of the 18"1 UVB, 1 plant light) at around 10 and the other two lights to come on at noon. This way it would be closer to "real" outdorr temperatures, in stead of having a warm day, cooler night cycle.

I do notice him wandering the whole cage. I find him low to the bottom, and a few times walking on the floor. He also hangs out under his basking spot for hours, and spends more of his day time at the top than at the bottom. I thiunk Ive finaly found the right combinations of lights and lamps for my panther....
