Damaged Asper

cressm3 May 06, 2004 01:34 AM

have a neonate Bothrops Asper, that while feeding on a fuzzie, developed a split in the skin first, immediately behind his head, and as he continued to swallow, started a new split, about 2 inches further down, and this split is about 2 inches long. I have applied neosporin to it, any other suggestions
Thanks
Barry

Send me the pic Barry, I can't get into snapfish. Not sure why the splitting occurs, other than its a genetic defect. My experience with terciopelos, has been only a small fraction of the litter are really "Genetically vigorous" animals, and many neonates, although feeding, may die for no explained reason withing the first several months of life.

Also, send more details, as too the age of the snake, WC or CB, etc. How much/often are you feeding it(usually not a problem with aspers).

Damaged? Sounds more like an injury to me. Super Glue or New Skin are designed for friable tissue. Disinfect the site, close the split w/ forceps, and seal it w/ a couple drops of Super Glue.

skin split while in course of swallowing a fuzzie, though asper is neonate of about 14 inches, the fuzzie should have not been the issue, no injury execpt as the animal fed. I am treating the wound channel with neosporin, and keeping it as clean as possible the wound channel has already almost totally closed up so suspect mending will be fast, feeding will have to be small for awhile scar will be horrendous but never suspected I would be entering him into a beauty contest, and as I have heard what doesn't kill you makes you stronger he will be hell on wheels lol
