Advice Needed on Aggressive Uromastyx

BrianT May 06, 2004 08:15 AM

I've run into a small dilemna. The large male mimic female I recently purchased (the one that also laid eggs), has become aggressive towards the other two uromastyx over the past two days. The other two get along just fine and I don't want either of them getting hurt, so I must decide what to do with the big female. Right now she's in a seperate temporary holding tank. My choices are to A) Sell her or B) Set up a 50gal rubbermaid I have until I can get another cage built for her later this year. I'd really hate to sell her as she's absolutely beautiful, she's given me a large clutch, and she's tame as can be, unlike the other two I have. Right now, I also don't have enough space to give her anything bigger than the large rubbermaid, but later this year I am planning on moving. So, give me your opinions and if you can think of any other pros/cons, let me know.
Thanks,
Brian

With her NEW Behavior.

Sorry your having some social problems with her, She may be acting aggressive because she had eggs.

Maybe she feels shes defending her nesting area.

Whatever, the case you were smart seperating her. I had that happen with a male and female I had together for several years.

Thought they were inseperatable. One day the female, (bigger) starting attacking the male. In a angry, vicious way! That was the end of that happy relationship

Anyway, you have to make that decision, to keep her or sell her.

I opted to keep both of mine, and the smaller of the 2 the male, got a slightly smaller enclosure, but more time out for a run, whenever possible.

Follow your HERP HEART, hahahhaha !

I agree with Eve...my female Mali became extremely aggressive with her male tank mate after she laid her eggs...luckily the tank SEEMS big enough (4' long) that they've worked it out..there's an invisble line right through the middle of the tank and as long as he stays on his side (with separate basking area, hide and feeding station) everything's fine...if he puts one toe over on "her" side, she comes erupting out of her hide and bites him repeatedly until he retreats back to "his" side...

As long as he stays healthy and doesn't lose weight, I'll leave them together...I'll be interested to see if her "egg aggression", which has been going on for about 6 weeks now, dies down over time, or stays at this level like forever...(hope not)..

I think I've read that female/female aggression is often more intense than female/male aggression. so you're smart to separate them...I can't tell you what to do with the aggressive female, but if you really like her I'd do whatever was necessary to keep her...She might do okay in a very large enclosure with a male or only one female...

Good luck...

I had thought about the eggs too, but she seems to make it a point to go after them. Even when they try to escape, she just keeps right on going. They're in a big cage too, 5'x2'x2'. I have her seperated, gonna give it a few days until I decide what I wanna do.
Thanks,
Brian

She's beautiful, tame as can be, has given you a large clutch. Where's the question? You've got a proven, great animal. I'll take her if you don't want her!!! I find it best to keep the best animals, and if you must get rid of any, get rid of the ones less desireable.
Just my 2 cents....
Beth
P.S. Of course, I can't get rid of any of mine, so I have a bunch of males that other people give me!!!!

IMHO, if you want to keep the uro, and there's no sacrificing of the uro's needs, then I'd say keep her.
Good luck

I'd also be interested in having her if you choose to give her up (although I would hope that you don't have to). She is beautiful.

She's probably just in protective-mother mode right now. Best thing to do is just wait it out and see if she'll accept the male back after egg season is over.

Hope it works out for you.

Good luck!

she was in such poor shape that I couldn't allow myself to buy an animal that looks like it might die on the way home. She wasn't moving at all and I could see her spine quite clearly. I didn't want to give that seller my business by buying an animal in such bad shape. I am still searching for a girlfriend for Ra. I think I've got a lead on so wish me luck.
