She finally gave birth!!!!!..........

Raven01 May 06, 2004 08:25 AM

As I was getting ready to leave for work, I looked in on my gravid girl and saw a little head poking up from under the sheet (I use cotton sheets for a substrate). Needless to say I put everything down and opened the cage. When I moved the sheet, I had a lovely pile of tiny boas (none more than 12 inches long - the average size she has). There were two stillborns and one slug, but the rest seem just fine. Because I know I won't be home until late tonight, I went ahead and put all the little ones in their own rubbermaid tub on damp towels and then cleaned the cage and put her back in it.n I discovered after her first litter that she's quite protective of her babies and didn't really feel like having six feet of boa hanging off my arm tonight.

Needless to say, I'm just tickled pink.

She cleared up within a day or so of going in blue, then had the babies sometime early yesterday morning. As of yet, she hasn't shed though she looks much darker than normal. She ate two small rats last evening and I dare say will shed sometime in the near future. I must admit I was surprised to find babies when I was just peeking to see if she had shed yet...not that I'm complaining.

Another perk that I was hoping for, but not counting on, was any pattern abnormalities - which I got to a degree. I used my best friend's male to breed my female this past season. When her female (bred by the same male) gave birth in 2002, there were a lot of pattern abnormalities including a female partial stripe with abherant saddles (which I have) and a male partial reverse stripe (which she kept) plus a bunch with just abherant saddles. This litter didn't show it as much - leaving me to believe her litter was truly a product of both parents - but there are several of them that show elongated red tail saddles and abherant body saddles. Seems the sire at least does have some odd genetics going on. I'm now REALLY looking forward to when the female I got from her litter matures enough to breed with a male from my litter.
