mealworms breeding in my tarantula tank

sila May 06, 2004 09:11 AM

About a month ago I had some extra mealies and I thought I would try and see if my T. wanted something besides crickets. Well of course he didnt touch them and they burrowed down into the redwood substrate. I only gave him maybe 3 or 4. Well yesterday I noticed 2 big black beetles and thought how the heck did those get in there..I pulled them out and began digging around and found tons of various size mealworms..I didnt realize they bred so easily..I dug out all I could find and let my bds have a feast..Should I change the Tarantulas substrate? Will these hurt him in anyway or can I just leave them and occasionally dig them out and feed them to the various lizards I have....

You should clean the mealworms and beetles out of your Ts tank. When your T goes through a molt, the beetles or the mealworms could kill your T while it is still soft and unable to defend itself.
