Writing CITES essay... any more ideas?

chimbakka May 06, 2004 09:57 AM

Hey everyone, I'm writing a short essay for English (under 1000 words). The first part will be about CITES (what it is, what it does, etc), and I wanted to include a part about some of the different species of reptiles protected by CITES. I've been working on it today, and I can't think of anything else to include in it.
Do any of you have any ideas? I'm in a grade 12 class, so the audience would be mostly 17 year olds (hurray for me taking time off lol).
Thanks a bunch!
PS, Orion is doing really well!

You could give short descriptions of some of the most "famous" species listed under the Endangered Species Act to make the connection between it and CITES in the USA. Some examples might make it more real. Also possibly describe what someone would need to take a CITES listed pet overseas, bring one into the US, etc. Did you go to the CITES info pages online? The USFWS has quite a bit of info on their website including lists of what is on CITES under the various appendicies. Also check out the World Wildlife Fund's TRAFFIC program. They document the trade and smuggling of CITES species worldwide and there might be some interesting cases highlighted. But, they tend to focus on the "charismatic megafauna" like tigers and rhinos. Not that these species don't deserve their attention, but hundreds more obscure and less lovable species are disappearing while we hug tigers.
