Could somebody please explain gut loading crickets to me?

Turtlequest May 06, 2004 11:28 AM

What are the benefits? What exactly does it do? How long? Best products?

If anyone can give me a nice overall summery on gut loading crickets i would be very thankful.

thanks.

Basically it comes down to, whatever your crickets eat your dragons eat when they eat them. I would gut load with stuff that I want my dragons to eat, like leftover greens and such. I also feed my crickets calcium enriched laying mash, basically the same stuff as the over the counter cricket foods but a 50lb bag is only like $8.

as said what crix eat, your BD eats. Gut loading means just that. Loading the crix gut with nutritional food. Problem is crix stomachs are so small and they poop so much, not much nutritional value is going to actually be in their gut. Dusting covers a lot more area and is much more effective.

BTW, raising crix on proper nutritional food is important. It is my understanding there was a case of crix eating damp grains that had grown a fungus. the crix became toxic and killed the BDs that ate them.

We use medicated chick start that you can get at the feed store for around 5 or 6 bucks.
