burned blood python

hoodoovoodoo54 May 06, 2004 01:32 PM

about a week ago now i noticed some discoloration on the underside of one of my male blood pythons, and upon closer inspection (which wasnt easy) i noticed that he's got what appears to be burns down a good portion of his underside. so, in response i've put him into a smaller quarantine tank, with no heat pad, just a light, on newspaper. the reading i've done on burns said to just keep the risk of infection to a minimum and be patient. about every 7-10 days i soak him in about an inch of water with betadine for about 20-30 minutes and i'm changing his paper every 3-4 days. is there anything else i should be doing? none of the burns appear to have gone very deep, like i said mostly just some mild discoloration, no flesh or bleeding or anything, is the saoking completely necessary? would applying polysporin to the area help? or being that it's on his underside would it be pointless? he doesnt seem to be having any problems, just a little more grumpy than usual.

one last thing, as far as feeding goes, should i take him off feed for a while to not stress the skin? i know because of the trauma he's likely to shed quickly and that was my only main concern with feeding, will keeping him on feed but using smaller prey keep him growing to shed even more quickly than just from the stress? or should i just leave him be and wait it out?

any input would be greatly appreciated

Are you positive that is it a burn? Fungal infections appear very similar to a burn, and would be very possible in the wet environment that bloods tend to like. If it is an infection, he would most likely need to see a vet to be sure there is no secondary infection. You can soak him more than you are, too. I would do that every other day with the betadine Try to keep him dry in his enclosure too. That will make sure that there is no infection...fungal or otherwise. Good luck
