Incubation Humidity

boscoman76 Jun 16, 2003 11:58 AM

I have a Hova Bator incubator, but I cannot seem to get the humidity above 80%. The eggs are in deli cups with small ventilation holes and wetted vercimulite. Any suggestions on how to increase the humidity to 90% ?

What type of humidity gage are you using? Digital or analog (Dial)? The analog ones are accurate to a point. It could be the gage wont read any higher than what you are seeing now. Digital Gages will measure/show from 0 to 100%, but accuracy is /- 3to5% for the genral ones offered through herp dealers. You can check either by boiling some water, holding the gage/sensor over the vapor coming off for a minute or two. If the gage doesn't go up, it is not responsive at the high end. If it does go up then you need to get more mositure in the incubator. One suggestion is to dampen some spagnum moss (or other readily absorbant materail) just to the point of dripping wet. (Standing water is not advised - it might grow something yukky.....) Place it in an open container (like a deli cup) in incubator. The high materail surface area will help humidify the air and raise the ambient humidity. I use this w/ a Havobator and maintian humidity in the 85 to 93% range....
