Feeding eggs

dubumb May 06, 2004 05:33 PM

When you guys feed your tegu eggs, are they raw? do you just give it the egg shell and all? and are they good for the tegu? I think i remember hearing cases of tegus getting addicted to eggs similarly to how leopard geckos can get addicted to waxworms... What are the facts?

Thanks.

my guys all get eggs once a week. sometimes they get whole fresh pigeon eggs, sometimes scrambled with a side of fruit. have not had a problem with them refusing other foods.

Soft cooked eggs, shell and all. Add pineapple chunks, apple chunks. Rufus likes his apples cooked first. I think it makes them jucier. Eggs and cheese. If you overcook them a little, that's ok. Chop them into bite sized chunks. I cook mine in the microwave. Be sure to cover the dish with a paper towel.

Experiment. If you have othere ideas that work...share them.

Due to past responses, I stopped feeding eggs to my tegus. However, I may start again since beardiedragon says she feeds her tegus eggs weekly! She is very knowledgeable about tegus, so I may restart feeding eggs. They are cheap and easy! I don't think it matters how you feed them. Tegus are tough little critters, and have been around much longer than us, so I think raw eggs would probably be better. This is just conjecture, but almost all foods lose nutritional value when cooked, so I will offer raw eggs. What I used to do, and will do again, is whip the raw egg so it is just liquid, and offer it in a kinda soup mixed with ground turkey and calcium dust. I always thought eggs where great (they're good for us, why not tegus). Lots of compact protein, and when mixed with the proper suppliments and some solid food, should make a great meal for any omnivore/carnivore.

I feed fresh pigeon eggs when avaialable. they are fed whole and uncooked to the adults. Thats to big for the yearlings. Everyone gets scrambled eggs (no shells) and fruit in the bowl but not cooked together. I forgot to mention I also mix in repcal juvie beardie pellets (high in protien). when cooked together they wont eat it but mixed together in the bowl they do.

BTW, this is me (with the beard) and Fred

this is my wife Susan (you can tell us apart because she does not have a beard)and Ricky
