what is humidity good for a complete shed?

LeeFobes Jun 16, 2003 12:27 PM

is 60-75% humidity good for a shed? i am getting 50% constantly without misting and such, but right when i mist, it bumps up to 75% and then after a day , it will go to 60% before i have to re-mist. I have the snake in an upside down plastic flower bot, it gives him alot of room, but he can touch the sides to make him feel secure. In that hide, i put damp moss, and a thin layer of repti-bark to act as a barrier between the heat pad, and the moss. Also, what are soom good temps? the basking area is appx. 85-90 farenheit, and the cool side is appx. 70-80farenheit.

I just have a Sterlite bowl with a hole cut in it with sphagnum moss inside it that I keep damp constantly. I've never had a problem since I gave everyone one. I don't know what the % is, but it gives them extended humidity that's good for sahed, so . . .

I use the sphagnum moss hide too, but it's still difficult here in Southern California to get humidity consistently high. What I've had good luck with is this:

I got one of those "Critter Keeper" things - the one that's wide and long, not tall. I put an inch or so of barely-warm water in it, and put the snake in for a bath. An hour later, I go back, take him out and put him back in his cage. I do this every day with each snake from the time he goes blue, and I'm now getting consistent one-piece sheds.

What I've been told (and what works for me) is that the water needs to be shallow enough that the snake can coil up and rest its head, otherwise it will get tired and drown. I'm very happy with the sheds, and the snakes seem to appreciate it, too.
