First adventure outside and questions for the pros...

boidsntegus May 06, 2004 07:49 PM

Update on Vito. He is now 25" and growing, I will post some updated pics in the next few weeks. Anyway, I tried our first adventure outside today, but no luck. I bought some elastic rope and those barrel clips to make a leesh, and he had no problems with me putting the leesh on him. I put him in a tote and carried him outside. As soon as he realized where we were, he went nuts. He started vibrating his tail like a rattler, headbutting the tote, and trying to jump out. I have heard of tegus getting attitudes when taken outside the first time, but he was friendly to me. While he was going nuts I tried to calm him by petting, and he didn't bite or tail whip or anything. My question is why this behavior? It was in the upper 80's today, so no temp related problems. He is from Agama, so I know he has been outside at least for 3 months of his life. Is he so afraid because he is still young? Has anyone else experienced this? Should I wait till he is older before trying again? How long did everyone else wait before venturing outside with their tegus? Any response is appreciated, just wanna get a feel for the more experienced people's practices.

BTW I was looking at pics of Vito's enclosure and I really like it... What size is it and what are you using for lighting/heating?

Its 5Lx2.5Dx3H. I originally designed it for a boa, but she was scared of such a large space. I moved her into a smaller house, so I had this huge empty enclosure with nothing in it. That's when I started studying large predatory lizards, resulting in Vito! Anyway, I use a 150W incandescant you would buy at a petstore for basking, one regular soft white 60W on the cool side (these serve as heat and light). I have 2 ceramic heaters for additional heat (the should actually be connected to a thermostat, but since its summer it can wait). I use a Reptisun 8.0 for UVB.

Yep seen this myself. I breed argentine tegus and have noticed this quite frequently. It is the difference between natural and artificial sunlight. When exposed to natural conditions tegus, bearded dragons, and lots of other reptiles seem to resort back to their natural wild selves. I believe this is a good thing for the animal and in due time they quite being aggressive. I have noticed this behavior in bearded dragons that were dog tame for years, placed in natural sunlight for minutes and BAM! Watch that sucker come to life.
It is normal, and a good chance to observe natural behavior.
