Leucistic breeding question...

boidsntegus May 06, 2004 08:04 PM

First, is a leucistic and a patternless the same thing? I will post pics soon, but I bought a subadult female leo sold to me as a leucistic ($65), but it also has no pattern. Purple tail, yellow body, purple head, silver eyes. Is it leucistic, patternless, or both? Second, what possibilities do I have for breeding? Example: mine x some morph = this morph? Do I have the chances for ghosts, blizzards, what? Pretty new to these guys, been keeping other herps over a year, just curious. By the way, she is a sweetheart! Thanks for your time.

hahha...well...what u described to us is definitely a patternless...leucistic usually refers to all white specimens but leucistic was misused for the patternless early on and the name stuck...the true leucistic gecko is what blizzardgecko, grimreaper, and myself LOVE LOVE LOVE...its the blizzard lizard...u may even find the title "true leucistic leopard gecko" attached to them...so all in all...the commonly used leucistic gecko is the same thing as the patternless gecko...

well...there aren't many "direct" results from breeding a leucistic/patternless...usually it takes 2 generations of breeders to get anything at all....blizzards were not produced from patternlesses..just a mutation i believe...the guy that produced them tested that...he bred a patternlesss with his first blizzard and got normal babies because both patternless and blizzards (true leucistics) are recessive traits...

what people try to get from a patternless usually is the patternless albino geckos...they are very nice...basically they are patterless geckos with lighter eyes...lighter skin...and usually a all white or light light grey tail...also another coveted morph is the banana blizzard lizard...which is a cross between blizzard and patternless...now if u add albino genes to that- then u have the blazing banana blizzard lizard which i have never seen pictures of....except photoshopped ones.....now they even have striped patternlesses..which is kinda redundant..but whatevers...i think its a cross between jungle/striped and patternless....NOW TAKE NOTE THAT: none of these morphs will appear by just breeding a patternless to lets say an albino/blizzard...u need to first produce hets because both of such phenotypes *physical characteristics caused by genes* are recessive...and therefore u will only have "normal looking" offspring that have the genes for patternless and albinism...when u inbreed the offspring....THEN u have a project going...cuz thats when the dbl hets might surprise you with a coveted banana blizzard lizard/patternless/blazing banana blizzard lizard (patternless blizzard albino)...this information should be correct...if anybody notices a mistake or anything please correct me...im learning too
