What else besides crix should I feed my 2 week old panthers? I wanted to get them some fruit flies, but the site I found them on was sold out. Thank you.

Um.. i'll prob. get a lot of feedback for this... so here i go ive tried this so it worked for me take a banana i used babyfood crushed banana put it in a jar the taller the better put it outside for a day or two by the second day you should have a fruit fly colony it works for me still cept in the winter becuase i live in the north where it snows
Thanks for putting your neck out for me. I might give it a try. If they grow and breed in the container, I wouldn't think you would have to worry about the old pesticide and poison warnings.
after you collect a bunch put them into the normal homemade fruit lfy media that the dart frog keepers use. this will stay fresh longer and shouldn't mold
also wait a few weeks until the wild flies die becuase they could have somthing in them like parasites or somthing else nasty
What do you mean by the normal dart frog medium? Sorry. Thanks.
Hmmm.... reading the posts about the fruit flies. Just wondering why go with wild fruit flies? If a site is out of them, try local pet shops.

I have to aggree here. The ones we use for herps are wingless or flightless. Once you create a wild colony you will be hard pressed to get rid of them as long as you have fruit around. The reson we get them in bananas (and other fruit) so readily is because the eggs have been laid in the skin. - ever wonder why they are suddenly "there" when you bring bananas home from the market and haven't even opened one yet? LOL!
Most Petco's etc. carry ff - just make sure you get a fresh one.
I don't know what site you went to but there are LOTS of sites that offer them:
my personal top two favorites:
reptilefood.com
http://www.timberlinefisheries.com/ (have a great kit)
http://www.herpfood.com/
drosophila.herpetology.com/
http://www.edsflymeatinc.com/

I'll buy one FF colony from the local pet store, and from this colony I'll start 4-5 colonies each week. In no time, I'm up to my ears in flightless fruit flies.
I make my own culture from instant mashed potatos, water, and baker's yeast. I put these in my bug closet (doubles as my egg incubator, warm and dark) for a couple weeks, and I'm set! I use fresh 32oz deli cups, never bother re-using (cheap!). I keep everything CLEAN. Always wash and sanitize my hands before and after handling my bugs. I have yet to lose a ff colony due to molds.
Problem I have is what to do with so many fruit flies! I feed them to my chameleons and fish. They love them, but can't keep up with the production!
One last thing. If you're having trouble finding Fruit flies, you may want to check with local College's Biology Department, or your local Herp Society. Also check with you exotics Vet, he might know a good local source.
