How to handle dart frogs?

ecologic72 May 07, 2004 04:03 AM

I'm a newcomer to dart frogkeeping- what is the least stressful method for moving a dart frog? Do most people use a net or just carefully cup the frog into their (bare or gloved?) hand...or is it possible to corral the frog into a cup?

so far I have been coaxing my darts into a small cup with a lid.

Some people now are using thin clear tubes to move frogs around. you put the tube in front of the frog and it jumps in it (usually) I have seen this done a number of times and it seems to be a heck of a lot less stressful on the frog

Yup, that's how I got the small cup idea. I didn't have any small clear tubes like that but I did have some small (duck sauce small) clear deli cups. You can usually just put the cup in front of the dart a it will just hop in. sometimes they need a little coaxing. Then I put the lid on, move the dart to where I want it and remove the lid to let the dart come out when it wants to.

Sorry for rambling on about this but it's something that doesn't get a lot of attention. I had a hard time finding any information on how to move darts when I got my first ones. And young darts in "nursery" tanks need to be moved for cleaning. I think this about the least stressfull way of doing it.

Oh, and be sure you clean and disinfect the container before useing it again on other darts you may have to prevent possible cross contamination.

Thanks for the replies....I guess corralling them into a small cup (with a lid) or tube is the way to go- that makes sense, one could accidentally lose or injure them using bare hands or risk roughing them up with a net.

I just use clear deli cups. Just make sure they and your hands are clean when you use them.
