Twitching in dart frogs

ecologic72 May 07, 2004 05:01 AM

I was observing some dart frogs at a local pet store and noticed one of PDF's toes twitching very briefly. Is this a normal nervous reaction, a genetic problem in CB darts or a husbandry issue?

I've also read a few posts where people have had frogs seizure, how common is this and could it be the result of stress? Inbreeding? Temperature?

I'm fairly new to darts and I currently have 3 different types (listed below my sig). All of them twitch or vibrate their middle toes on thier rear feet. It happens when they are hunting. I'v asked about this and I'v been told this was common.
The first time I saw this I thought I had problems until I noticed that they were all doing it.

To be clear, this is a vibrating of the rear middle toe on each foot and it's not constant, except while feeding or excited.

It's difficult to answer questions like this without actually seeing what is going on. Hopefully someone with more experience than me will chime in.

Good luck!

Well my tincs have always done it from baby to adult, when excited or feeding or dealing with another tinc (the twitching the toes). I guess I never questioned if it was a defect I just thought it was something they did to communicate like vibrating their throat. All I know is all my Tincs are healthy my adults are big and nothing has ever been wrong with them so I just let them do what they do.

My azures, auratus, and tincs all twitch when hunting and when I caught auratus in Hawwaii they did it too.

Thanks for the replies. I suppose this is just one of the curisoities of the frogs...as I said I'm new to the hobby, just obtained my first two dart frogs and, like a new baby (...well, I have no kids) just want to make sure my babies are alright.

I've been reading about the husbandry of these frogs for about a year, but there are things they just don't write about in the books- that you can only learn from experience, thanks again.
