Can someone please help me identify my carpet?

ChrisUK May 07, 2004 07:33 AM

Hi guys.
I know this fella is a carpet and I've had him around two years now. I've always thought he was a coastal, but having seen other coastals on the net, I'm not sure. Could he be an Inland carpet???
Have tried to paste my own pic onto this, but it won't bloody work! Have included a link to a picture of a snake with identical markings (not literally) to my guy.

Thanks in advance.

Since you are just showing someone else's pic to try to ID your snake, you probably aren't going to get any accurate answers except to what the snake in the picture is, not your snake in particular. Also, it could get you into trouble using other people's pics without their permission. If you'd like, email me your pic at:
Yasser at spitfirereptiles dot com
I can upload it to my account and post the pic for you.
Then we can truly see what you've got and try to ID it for you.
But just for the record, the pic you alrwady posted is an Inland. But some Coatals can show a similar "look" about them that can make them look like an Inland to the untrained eye.

Thanks for the info Yasser. I did wonder about posting someone elses pic, that's why I mentioned it wasn't mine, so I didn't look like I was trying to take any credit.
The problem with my pic is that when trying to put them in the gallery, it said it was too big. I'll try and take one or two decent photos, and if you don't mind I'll email them on. As I explaind to another chap who replied, I didn't get him from a breeder, just a grotty pet store, which is now (thankfully) closed down. The guys in the shop didn't even know what kind of snake he was. Good job I did!

Chris,
You're not giving us any valid info to work with. Identical markings don't mean anything in the Carpet World as patterns are VERY variable among the sub species. If you're serious about having someone here give you an educated guess we need the following:
1. aproximate age and size
2. Pictures of the snake (Full body)
3. In-focus Side Head Shot
4. Top of head shot (Close up shot so that the scales can be counted).

To upload pics you need to register at the photo gallery on KS and upload you pics into the gallery. Once its loaded into the gallery, right click on the full size image and go to properties. Copy the 'Address (URL)' and then paste it into a Forum message with the following brackets before and after the URL. ( Instead of using , use [] instead)
URL Address

The only thing I can tell you about the pictured carpet you've posted is that it doesn't look like any inland carpet I've ever seen.

Also, there is nothing wrong with owning just a 'carpet python'. There are a lot of mutt carpets out there and again due to their variable pattern can be VERY difficult to pinpoint.

Other ways you can generally determine if its a coastal:
-If you baught it from a breeder and they said it was a coastal then thats a fair bet.
-If you know what the parents look like then you might be able to better determine the subspecies or if you have a carpet cross.

That's what I did with the pics, but they were too big.
I bought him from as pet store where he was kept in pretty poor conditions to be honest. I asked them how much the carpet python was and they didn't even know which snake I was talking about. The guy in the shop said (oh is that a carpet python?" Thankfully the RSPCA (royaL society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) closed them down.
If I have anymore luck with the pic, I'll repost. Another chap on here has left an email address too and says I can email the pic to him. Thanks for the response!

I noticed Yasser offered to take a look. Thats probably the best plan for now. Still if you can let him know aproximate size and how long you've had him, or any other details you might have about your carpet, it will help him.

Best of luck,
Darci
