Please explain term and question about Egyptian Uros

URO_Sailor May 07, 2004 07:47 AM

I have heard the term "gravid" thrown around alot and I am interested in what it means.

Also, Somewhere down the line(money and time permitting) I wanted to add an Egyptian Uro to my growing pet population...What type of tempermant do they have? How much room will I need for them? Any other info on them that you think I should know?

Also just an update on Blue(Mali Uro) who was injured last month in a fall...She is doing well...Walking and eating again(thank God)....She seems to spend more time cuddled up with Thor(Yellow Nigerian) than she used to which I think is cool....He seems to comfort her...Well thats all for now...Thanks.

Egyptians grow to be up to 3' in length (most don't though, I don't think). If you go by the 4x2 rule, that's a 12'x6' floor space for an enclosure, though you could probably get away with 10'x4'. I've never met one, so I don't really know the personality.

So I will try and answer your question on disposition !

These bigger uro's can be aggressive with other uro's if they choose. But as far as my girl, she could not be any sweeter with me.

I did put alot of time and handling into her, I got her as a burn victim.

Shes extremely tame, active, strong.

I love this species, for the size. They do get alot larger than the other uromastyx species. She makes my adult Saharan male look like a little guy

Cleo is about 20 -21 inches now and still growing!

They are not Bright and Beautifully colored like the others. But the size and attitude is awesome in my opinion.

They walk like Gators, hehehehe big front fore-arms and claws.

Good luck with your choice.

I too share the love of these burly Uros.
I have 6 now including possibly breeding a pair.
Be very careful introducing egyptians to another Uro
Recently I had one get a hold of a 11" Moroccan pick it up in it's jaws and hold it in the air above its body. No damage inflicted on the moroccan, but scared the crap out of me.
They vary in temperament and growth rates and physical characteristics. But on whole are very docile...
