Surface Temperature Vs. Ambient Temperature

soulp97 May 07, 2004 11:47 AM

I want to be sure that i'm measuring surface and ambient temperatures correctly...and that i have the ideal settings for my bearded dragons, Luca and Alexander.

I am measuring the surface temp by placing a thermometer directly on the basking log. It is the hottest part of the cage, and is measured at 105 degrees.

I am measuring the ambient temperature with a thermometer stuck to the glass near the basking log. It reads about 90 degrees.

I have another thermometer on the glass in the cool part of the cage which is around 80 degrees.

Could one of the pros here confirm if this is the best way to set things up? I want the absolute ideal settings for my buddies. I've always been confused if the 105 hot area was supposed to be surface temp or ambient temp.

Thanks in Advance,
Jon Z.

Basking temps are surface temps.. sounds like you're doing fine, the only better way to confirm it would be to use one of those infrared thermometers that you just point at the spot.
