Ringneck Snake Question

figment May 07, 2004 05:02 PM

Hi! I'm new here, so please bear with me...

Today I found a very small (about 5" long) Ringneck Snake - in the hallway of my office, of all places. I brought it home because I really couldn't find an appropriate place to release it outside. It's now in my son's old fishbowl; I tried to recreate a damp woodland environment as best I could.

Anyone out there ever raise a baby Ringneck to adulthood? One of the people in the office recommended feeding it mealworms, but I can't find anything to back it up. It's so small, I'm not sure it can eat an earthworm.

I need all the help I can get, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Barbara

any suggestions?............mine would be to release it under a rotting log where there's plenty of it's natural feed.you could feel good about giving it the best possible chance to reach adulthood.they are difficult at best to raise.other species (such as corns or kings) are better adapted to captive rearing.

I'm gonna have to agree with twh, small ringneck snakes are probably best left alone in the wild, you could feed it small earthworms, small frogs, small salamanders, ant eggs, termite eggs, mouse parts, but some babies will never adjust to captivity, I though know many people who have raised babies to adults and I have as well, if you are further interested in the care of ringneck snakes, there is a caresheet on the link I included below.

I wouldn't say you have to release it but i had two very small ringnecks that i received from a local dealer and they ate well on earthworms. The only problem is the smaller a snake is the better its escape-artist tendencies. A fishbowl prolly wont hold it. Better to try a real tank with a locking lid. good luck
