??? about sphagmum moss...

repzoo44 May 07, 2004 06:34 PM

I seem to be having a hard time finding this for some reason. What about Orchid moss? Could that be used instead? Thanks for your help.

What area of the country are you in?
I was having a hard time finding sphagnum moss too. Then someone suggested I try Big Hardware Chains. I found some at Home Depo. (Lowes had it as well). If you go this route, I'd suggest boiling the moss before using it, to avoid possible chemicals or buggies that might be on it (cool before use). It's apparently used for hanging baskets of flowers.
Good Luck

Yeah, I was actually at both of these places today. I found some vermiculite at Lowes so Im not totally without anything but neither place carried the moss. They only had peat moss. Im going to check out some of the smaller garden centers around but I figured that one of the big stores would have it. Oh well. Oh yeah, Im in Greensboro, NC. Thanks for the help.

Peat and sphagnum are the same thing. The stuff at Lowes(they probably carry the same brand down there as they do up here in PA) actually says "peat sphagnum moss". or it might be "sphagnum peat moss". i've found that bed-a-beast, or a mixture of peat and bed-a-beast works best. the sphagnum/moss seems to dry out faster, and where bed-a-beast stays fluffy when dry, the sphagnum/moss will turn into a rock hard brick.

when you do find it, remember that a little bit goes a LONG way. get the smallest package of it they have. i bought three cubic feet of it, and still have two thirds of it left, two years later.
