Midland Painted and African Sideneck

reptilicus81 May 08, 2004 04:15 AM

I have two equally sized turtles..one is a midland painted and one is an african sideneck. They are currently in sep. enclosures, but I have a larger breeder 40 gallon that I would like to use for both turtles...they are about 5 inches in shell length. I have read that the african sidenecks can be a bit aggressive towards other species....this guy is real shy though! Any suggestions? Could I keep them together?

I would vote against it. Anytime your mixing differnt species from different areas of the world I think its a bad idea. Say a Midland Painted and a RES, ok. But an American turtle with an African turtle? I say no. The African sideneck was most likley imported (wild caught). There for, it could contain parasites, ect. that could infect the other turtle. I would keep them seperated.

Unfortunetly, the turtle species are all mixed in the tub at the petstore, so whatever parasites the african sidenecks have the other turtles will have too. I didn't want a res because it will outgrow my 40 gal, and african sidenecks don't get quite as big! I kept them separated for a while, but they are doing very well together. Much better than I thought because I hear sidnecks like other mud turtles can be a bit nippy.
Thanks
