HOW DO WE GET RID OF ROUNDWORMS!!!!!!!>>>>>>>>>read on!

cv768 May 08, 2004 09:16 AM

We brought our iguana's feces to the vet and she has roundworms. We've given her a dosage of fenbendazole one a week for about 2 months now and the worms are still there!

We cleaned the enclosure thoroughly with lysol and house cleaing spray and then wiped it down with water.

What should we do???

The vet also recommended Ivermectin but I've heard it's toxic to reptiles and it can be lethal.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I've been hearing a lot of great things about grapefruit seed extract. I know it works well for bacterial infections, though I'm not sure if it's as effective on worms. But in any case it is non-toxic (in proper doses) and does not have the harmful side effects of most antibiotics.

You can read more info on it here:

Best of luck,

i would go back to the vet and tell him. if the feces came back with roundworm i'm surprised the vet didn't give you some other kind of meds. maybe you should look for another vet.

If I were you I'd tell the vet what you heard about the new medication, and find out what (s)he has heard. If the vet can say with confidence that there is no risk to herps from the medication, and is a herp vet, I would trust him/her. Otherwise, I might look for another vet.

The vet did say that he had researched Ivermectin before and said it was safe for all but Turtles and Tortoises. The information I gave was from Melissa Kaplan's website. Maybe there have been improvements in the drug since?

Who knows...anyway, Fenbendazole is supposed to be the best, most effective, and non-toxic way to treat iguanas and other reptiles for internal parasites...but these buggers won't go away!

Any other suggestions?
