Bredding Mealworm Question

jsc230 May 08, 2004 10:42 AM

So, I've had beetles in my Beetle-Pay-By-The-Hour hotel for over a month now. However, I see no signs of baby mealworms yet. The beetles are on bran and are give carrots constently. I have noticed some caniblism in the beetles, it's not too bad but it happens.

So I was wondering if I just need to wait a little bit longer or if I have something wrong with my husbandry?

You should add in a peice of cardboard somewhere within the enclosure, this way they have something to lay their eggs onto.

OH, I forgot I do have a paper towel roll and a toilet paper roll in the thing too. Also there are between 150-200 beetles. (130 i counted when i movedthem between enclosures and many have been added)

It make take a little while to get your mealie colony off to a start. I remember when I started my mealworm colony almost 4 years ago it took a little while.

IMO I dont think you need any cardboard. Just forget about that. All I use is my substrate which is the gut-load and plastic boxes, and of course the beetles.

I have a care sheet on my website about breeding the mealworms if you are interested in looking at it.

Over time you will begin to see baby mealworms moving about. They will be extremely tiny but if you look closey and dig about in the substrate you'll find them.

Or if you dont see anything by now maybe you dont have any males, or females so they cant reproduce. I'm not sure how big your colony is or how many beetles you have, but it was just a suggestion.

Yeah, Shayna has an awesome mealworm sheet. I used it, and so far so good. In under 2 months maybe, I am starting to see the fruits of my... or her labor. Got tons of little mealies. I guess due to the trial and error of other people, I have compiled all their info to made a semi-successful breeding arena. But with little hatchlings, they are eating the baby mealies, so I doubt I'll have much make it to adult hood, for the time being its not too expensive to buy and hopefully things will get kicking in the near future.
