How old for a male hamster to reach sexual maturity?

JM Jun 16, 2003 02:36 PM

I don't think I even want to be breeding hamsters, but I am. At any rate, I made a mistake. Left the male hamster in with the female too long. (Syrian hamsters I think, male is little "Golden" classic looking hamster, female is very large "Calico" but has body shape like male, just much larger)

Well, I left him in there, and she nuetured him. He is still alive, and I think he may even survive, but I suspect he is going to be useless as a breeder.

Well, I looked this morning. She is obviously pregnant. If I save one of her male pups as a future mate for her, how long before he reaches sexual maturity?

OH~ An while I'm at it.........how long is it safe for the male to be with the female for purposes of breeding? (I'd rather she NOT nueter another)

Male pups are probably able to breed at 6 wks.
To breed hams you really do what bunny breeders do and take the female to the male and watch them. She will either try to kill him, ignore him or let him breed her. If she is in heat she will likely let him breed her right away. Then separate them back to their own cages. You can try breeding every day for a week and see. But once they breed and she is pregnant you can just leave him to himself again and her likewise. Hamsters are NOT social.
