HELP MITES!!!

macajuel May 08, 2004 01:25 PM

Last month i wrote about an incident where my fiance picked up one of our baby boas and she saw a black bug on her hand (mite), so i cleaned out the tank last week and soaked each boa seperatly. then this morning i looked into one of their water dishes and found an unwelcomed guest, another mite. i have 3 baby boas 24 inches and under in a custon 65-75 gallon tank with bark, a huge wood log and little decors. does anyone know of a fast and safe way to get rid of this problem. thatnks guys.

In addition, it helps to soak your boa. Just get a Rubbermaid that the snake can stretch comfortably out in. Fill with warm dish-soapy water just enough to cover the snake's body, but not so much that it has to struggle to keep its nose abovewater. Leave him in while you're treating/cleaning his cage, and then remove him. This will safely kill off most if not all mites on the snake's body.

First take out everything and get rid of the bark and the wood hides. Use newspaper or white papertowels until problem is over. I also use the plastic tool bins you can buy at lowe's or home depot...they come in a 5 pack for around $5 and are great hide boxes for baby to small snakes. Clean cage good use a diluted bleach 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. You then rinse tank well and dry with a towel. When dry put tank in a seperate room and give empty tank a short spray with prevent a mite. Let this dry and also spray a little on the papertowels you will be putting in the tank bottem. When this is dry in about 15 to 30 minutes, then set up tank with paper towels or newspaper putting water in a clean plastic dog bowl back in cage is ok. The important thing with this stuff is that the snake cannot breath in the vapors so do it away form snake room. When dry this stuff is ok for snakes. The white paper towels let you see the mites better and you can clean accordingly. Hope this helps. Andy Federico
