For Veronica about Teo

Gunilla May 08, 2004 03:10 PM

Thank you *so much* Veronica for asking your vet about Teo’s problem! I really appreciate it! But I know it is nearly impossible to say what might be wrong without seeing her.

Your vet asked if it was both eyes, and yes it is. And the lenses are perfectly clear, not cloudy.

My ordinary vet has quit her job, so now I have to drive all the way to Stockholm to see a new vet (Thankfully she is a very good vet!). It will be a 4 hour drive one way so it is hard to “just go there” if you know what I mean… And this new vet is away and won’t be back until the end of May so I guess I just have to wait and hope that Teo’s condition won’t get worse…

I will print your vets’ opinion and bring it along when I see the vet. It is *always* good with several opinions. I really appreciate that Mark Burgess took the time to look into this – thank him from me!

He mentioned a possibly viral or unusual parasitic disease. I wonder if it might be Teo’s problems with coccidia? She just can’t get completely rid of it…

Just two more questions…! What exactly is glaucoma? I have tried to search for it at the net, but I don’t quite understand exactly what it is?

And what are cataracts? (Sorry for all these questions, but it is a bit hard to be Swedish when it comes to medical stuff! I am not even good at it at Swedish! Haha)

I will keep you updated!
/Gunilla

Hello Gunilla,

I sent you an email with Dr. Burgess' response. He basically said that if it is Glaucoma that it can cause blindness. I'm afraid for Teo and hope she doesn't have this. To tell you the truth, I haven't done that much research on this type of disease. Perhaps CheriS would be of some help here?

Thanks for keeping us updated on Teo's situation. I'm very interested to hear what the vet says. Good luck Gunilla.

Glaucoma is when there is a pressure or swelling in the eye (interocular pressure). It can damage the nerve to the eye. There are 2 types. One type appears without a known cause. The other type is pressure due to another eye disease. It is sometimes associated with daibetes and in some instances stress.Depending on the type it can be treated with meds. or surgery.

Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye. It can be caused by old age, an infection or injury. Surgery is usually required. There are several types of cataracts.

Is this a recent occurance or has it been a gradual onset? I was thinking there is also a disease where the eyes are large and swell. I can't think of the name at the moment. However, the movie star Bette Davis had the disease and was know for her large eyes.

I hope this has helped you in some way. Good luck and keep us informed

Oh yeah! I think Marty Feldman the comedic actor also had an eye condition which caused swelling.
