Columbians and Central Americans???

srsnakes May 08, 2004 04:44 PM

So I have a question that might seem silly but i have to ask anyways... Steve and I own Columbian Red Tails, like most people and we have been offered a trade for a Central American Hypo, But i am unsure as to the compatibility of these two individual localities.. I know that Gus Renfro and some others out there will definetly be able to help so i turn to you guys to tell me whether this is a good trade and i will be able to breed this beauty to my female columbians.. I really do think i will get the snake anyways cause its beautiful but i would still like to know if it will be a useful breeder for me and steve.. Any and all input will be helpful.

Sincerely,
Rose Hipskind

Hi Rose,
First off they are Colombian Boas and the school is Columbia University, not the same spelling but a common mistake with the boas.
Now onto the trade, the hypo Central Americans can breed fine to the Colombian Boas, hence the original Salmon Boas. The Salmon hypos were started from Central American stock. The Hypo trait (as we refer to it, Orangey color with reduced black) is very common in the Central American Boas. In fact if you look at some of the sights that sell Honduran Boas, you will see that they look very much like Hypo/Salmon Boas. I plan on getting a pair of these guys this season to do a little experimenting with to see how similar the Locality Morph is to the color morph. But yes they will breed together.
Thanks
