stkkts Jun 16, 2003 03:01 PM

Is it true that if i soak my ball python in blua gatorade for 15 minutes, he will become the blue color? does he keep this color until his next shed? is there any harm that can be cause by doing this to him?

Yes, you snake will develop a form of reptilian cancer from the aspiphosporilaminamen in Gatorade. Its safe for humans but deadly for snakes. Dont dye your snake.

i thought people soaked the balls in gatorade to help rehydrate. I have seen pics of blue ones. i was under the impression thats how they did it.

I rehydrate by getting the liquids INTO the body where it is needed. I use gatorade as well.

Is there a way to do it without stressing them? Just asking for future reference.

jmartin104 Jun 16, 2003 09:57 PM

In rare cases, I take care of sick animals. These animals are already stressed and often need to be fed and rehydrated. For example, I'm nursing a stubborn chondro back to health. I mist her constantly so she can drink when she wants. She is tube-fed weekly. Though stressful (it beats the alternative - death), I try to make it as easy as possible. This is were she gets her nourishment and rehydration.

But if you mean putting gatorade in a bowl, no, I don't think that would be a good idea. At least not leaving it for days.

I've used gatoraid for years to rehydrate rescued reptiles (snakes and lizards) and there is nothing in it that would cause cancer in reptiles. I (as both a pre-vet student and a QA chemist) would like to know where you heard this and I'd like to see a chemical break down of this so called aspiphosporilaminamen. You can safely used gatoraid with your herps but I have no clue of why you want to dye your BP blue . . . hmmmm kinda like the red BP's huh?

JDP Jun 17, 2003 08:51 AM

Are you an idiot? I was KIDDING! The guy doesnt sound like he knows much so if I gotta tell him that Gatorade will cause cancer in his snake to keep him from doing it, so be it.

but I am sick and tired of so called experts giving out ridiculous and horribly wrong information to the newbies. First off, after years of being the person who had to fix mistakes, help heal animals and re-educate, I saw your post and thought "oh great another know it all. Secondly you need to watch who you call an idiot . . . who's the idiot, the one that gave out truthful info or is it the person who made a joke post to a newbie and now must explain himself?

JDP Jun 17, 2003 09:11 AM

I believe the idiot is the only one who *obviously* didnt get the gist of my post. Are all you scientific types so uptight?

stkkts Jun 17, 2003 11:39 AM

I have had my ball python for 6 years now. he is perfectly healthy and happy. im not a newbie, just new to this forum. And i thought i read that people soaked their lizards in gatorade to rehydrate them, and that a side effect was that it turned the animal the color of the gatorade until its next shedding. you dont have to LIE to me, saying it causes cancer, just tell me it does or doesnt work, and i was under the impression it only had to be done for 15 minutes, not days. i wasnt gona use cold gatorade either.

and as to my reasoning for it, i just thought it would be cool to have a blue snake, people would totally freak out when they came over.

JDP Jun 17, 2003 12:57 PM

Would you soak yourself in Gatorade to look "cool"? I didnt think so....dont do it to your snake.

stkkts Jun 17, 2003 03:46 PM

it works for blue man group....
