Not hiding.....opinions needed......

lilroach56 May 08, 2004 05:28 PM

My tremper albino lexy hasn't been hiding since i moved her to her new cage (rubbermaid around the size of a 20L). She prefers just to bask and sleep on the heat pad during the day and run around at night. It appears as though she can't see through the sides of the rubbermaid well, as she only takes notice when i open the top and she looks up at me. Do you think something is wrong (ie. eye problems), or do you think she feels more secure in the rubbermaid?

i have a semi clear and also opaque rubbermaids/sterilites and ive found that the ones in the opaque rubbermaids are much likely to roam around...i don't think they can see u cuz well..the ones i have..i can only see a shadow when they are against the walls....other than that...im sure they feel much more secure...nothin wrong...just a happier gecko

I don't know how old your new tremper is, but I have found that hatchlings and juvies do alot better in a more confined space. Believe it or not I have noticed this many times and the results can be dramatic. Also make sure there is one hide on the warm side she or he prefers and I am sure it will use it. Hope this helps you out.

Its not new, she is around a year old. And i now all about hides (i have read more stuff on hides than many could imagine) and temp gradients.

You might want to do away with the Mozzerella cheese stix boxes from TGIF. Also usually to get a gradient you need to place the heat source underneath something to properly spreadout the heat. Heat conducts and spreads through contact with an object.Actually from your pics it also looks as if you don't really have a gradient. Being that your heat source is directly inside the tank underneath the "hide". I recommend placing the heat source underneath some sort of substrate if not underneath the tank itself. Just looking at that setup it looks as if there is no inbetween temps. Right outside the "hide" He might be able to thermoregulate but I doubt it. Even using a heating pad underneath the tank can produce a better gradient than what your pictures are showing. Hope all this helps. Take care!

"You might want to do away with the Mozzerella cheese stix boxes from TGIF"-Why? it is one of the hides my leo loves the best.
"Being that your heat source is directly inside the tank underneath the "hide"."-Where did you get from my pics that the heat source is inside the tank? are you having images poping through your head? "Just looking at that setup it looks as if there is no inbetween temps."-how? There is no heat pad i am aware of that is 30" by 12", the heat pad i am using is like 1/3 area of cage.
"Right outside the "hide" He might be able to thermoregulate but I doubt it."-In case you didn't notice there are 4 hides in the cage, 3 dry and one humid.
"Even using a heating pad underneath the tank can produce a better gradient than what your pictures are showing."-I AM using a heat pad underneath the cage, how did you think i was heating it? I mean seeing as you know all about my set up. Sounds like you are making a bunch of crap up.

Maybe you need to update your gallery. The pics clearly show a wire from some sort of heat source going directly into a hide that you have in your tank? Or am I seeing things? If so I apologize. I was just trying to help someone new to leopard geckos.I guess you have figured out!

I'm pretty sure thats a therm w/ a probe under that hide...not a heat source...rather something "checking" the heat source thats under his tank....maybe you should ask him what it is...before you assume its something else.

I didn't realize that was your thermostat probe. Couldn't tell. Sounds like you have everything figured out!
