Question for breeders............

ajfreptiles May 08, 2004 06:35 PM

I have two very nice females and I am trying to decide which one will be the mate for my Salmon male. I am going to try and breed them both, but want to have the priority one first. One female is very dark coloration, where the black pigment is like plastered all over the tail end limiting what red color you would normaly see, the other female is very clean and pale, has very limited black and shows the red in tail. It may sound obvious to the more experienced which girl to use, but I am not experienced. I am wondering being that she will be bred to the hypo...will his hypo gene simply reject the black in the babies?? Not having experience with this I wonder if that could result in better babies? Or when bred to the lighter female, will his hypo genes show even more vivid? Thanks for all the help. Andy Federico

Andy,

I dont think this question is all that cut and dry.

Some people would probably suggest the lighter colored female with the idea that the hypo babies will be that much lighter.

Some people would probably suggest the darker colored female with the idea that the hypo babies will be that much richer in color.

Here is what I would suggest. You pick... Regardless, once you see those neos your going to be grinning from ear to ear. Of course you will have to post lots of pics for us all to see.

Good luck, and keep us posted

well, the "sure thing" would appear to be the lighter, cleaner female...but i would be curious to see what kind of pigment all that black is hiding...

in the end, this is your experience, enjoy it....

so really, it's a coin toss, either way should yield some great results...

good luck with your project, chris

If we were talking Albino with the complete removal of the black pigment then the answer would indeed be the darker black female, but because the Hypo gene is limited in what it does and how much it removes then the choice for the cleaner, lighter hypo would be the cleaner lighter normal female. I would bet that you would be able to get the male to breed to both though. I don't recommend breeding one male to several females, but just breeding to two females should work ok.
Good Luck
