Complications with Albino Leopard gecko

fadetolemons May 08, 2004 07:13 PM

As stated in the post directly below this, I just ordered a new baby albino leopard gecko. I've read that they are more sensitive to light, especially when younger, than other leopard geckos. Is this true and does it cause any problems with raising them? Will this trait go away after time? Thanks, Will

but my leo has shone no i'll effects when it comes to light. All you really have to worry about is take head shots with the flash (my leo will stand still for like 15 seconds after the flash). You shouldn't be to worried though as it really doesn't make a difference.

ive never had an albino myself...but ive taken care of my friend's leos when he went to chicago to look at northwestern college but anyway..the thing is ive noticed that they always close their eyes when i take them out under the light...they seem to be much more lethargic in light...my friend keeps them in a seperate room thats always dark and has a NightGlo TM light on at night....he says that since they don't like to be in the light, they are reluctant to hunt...of course it shouldn't make a PROFOUND difference...but this is especially seen with red-eyed albinos....

Red-eyed albinos are especially sensitive to light, and don't see well unless it's relatively dark. This can cause slower growth due to the inability to see their prey.

Would you guys suggest i withdraw my order on the albino and get something else instead? He would be in a room that is lit all day and would be handled a lot.

Hi

No, don't cancel your order, they are very beautiful geckos and I think that you would enjoy it.

Go to the store and buy some of that nice background scenery paper and put it around three sides of your tank and that will cut down on the light that goes into the tank. When it is time to feed your gecko, you could always take a towel and cover the front of the tank and the lid a little to make it darker in there while your gecko is hunting for it's food. Just leave enough of the top uncovered so you can put a dome light with a black light bulb there to give it some light for hunting.

As far as holding it, you could take it out of it's tank to hold it and then go into a part of your house that doesn't have a lot of light coming in from the windows, or you could stay in your room and pull the blinds closed.

Alright, you said i should get a black light for it? does it need this to see it's prey or is this just so i can see it better? Thanks
