Look what I built this weekend!

JM Jun 16, 2003 03:19 PM

I'm ridiculously proud of myself! But my back hurts like hell now!

The mouse rack holds 10 cat pans, and is on wheels ~ So I can move it!)

This is the new snake rack I built. It holds 24 shoeboxes or 8 sweater boxes. I had a little extra room at the top so I added one more layer that can hold very small shoe boxes but will probably be used to store supplies. I put it on wheels (Cuz that was the only way I had a prayer of moving it!) and ran two strips of 11" flexwatt on the back panel, which are independently controled by two dimmers routed into the top panel. (Need an actual router, top panel does not look as nice as I would like) in the middle is a thermostat set to shut off if the heat tape exceeds 100F

Looks great. I plan on making one soon do you breed rats also. I found walmart has the cheapest cat litter pans. The big ones are $1.87 each. I love the snake rack. I built one for my balls. i am using a waterbed heater and thermostat to heat it and it works great.

Wow, if you found large pans for $1.87 each, snatch them up! Walmart here wanted 4.50 each, and the pet warehouse places (Petco, petsmart) were even worse. I bought those pans on-line for 2.60 each. I got 20 of them as I find it much easier to clean the racks if I have a clean pan ready to load in when I remove the dirty pan.

As far as rat racks, yeah. I built one about 3 or 4 weeks ago. For the rats I used cement mixing tubs from Home depot. $3.90 each. The pic shows it with 4 levels, but I have since lowered all of those levels and put a 5th level in. The top is where I store the extra pans for cleaning day. The extra cat pans for the mouse rack nest right inside those cement mixing tubs so that works well for me.

I use water bottles rather than an auto water system as I like to be able to move the racks. (gotta have wheels) I see above you asked about auto water systems. Check the Bean farm. (Don't know addy, type "Bean farm" into your search engine)

Thanks for the info. The rack looks good. I will check out the bean farm.

Do you have any closeups or a list of materials for how you built that? It is excellent and EXACTLY what I want to make!!
Thanks

What an absolutely awesome rack.

I also liek the one for the rats. I am beginning to see that rats are really so much better. (I had a barrier to raising rats because of preconceived notions). Well, after learning more about rats and seeing it done, I am now wanting to start with a few rats (just two females). Tehre is really so many advantages that rats have over mice. 1. they don't smell bad. 2. they get to eating size so fast. 3. they are friendly and you can play with them. They are almost liek small dogs in some ways.

By the way, how were you able to fit two images into one post? I would like to do that. Please tell me. Thanx in advance!!
