dfw report 05.01

thebronze May 08, 2004 10:45 PM

Saw this years first copperhead at rowlett creek park.
He was about 2' long and did not want to move off the trail.
Took me about 5 minutes to get him into the bushes.
Stubborn little sobs aint they?

Have also come across some fat little yearling garter snakes that are very pretty and almost look like the checkered variety.
Does anyone know the sub species? Bright yellow and orange stripes. I think I will snag the next one I come across and house sit him for a little while.

I should have brought my camera today but was tired of lugging it around and then not finding anything, so of course I then find the copperhead. Funny, it was in the 70's today and I thought it might have been too cool for snakes.

Anyone else having any luck or know of some good spots around DFW? I have not seen any rat snakes this year.

should be Texas garter snakes, a subspecies of the common garter snake. Checkered garters usually don't have bright stripes.

Erik, what are those green garters you've got pics of?
awesome looking snake.
You keep them captive?
Will they feed on pinks, crickets, meal worms?
I used to feed mine minnows when I was a kid.
