Off the top of my head, I think that each state (lower 48) has at least one aquatic salamander species native to it, although in some states this may be represented be a padeomorphic tiger salamander.

thanks for help. are there any good picture reference books that i may find all or most of these in?

I would recommend Petranka's Salamanders of North America and Canada as an excellant reference as this has all but the most newly described species. It also had pictures of all of the species listed although many may not be in color.
I am unaware of any book that has all of the species shown in color.
